You don't have to grow your own family tree here. Some people just work on historical figures or distant ancestors.

The traditional way to grow your tree is to start with your account profile, then add your parents, then add their parents, etc. Instead, you could start with a grandparent or great-grandparent.

This is super-easy and lots of WikiTreers do it. Here's how:

  1. Create an account as normal. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can register with initials. Don't use a fake name and don't register as if you were your ancestor. That's a common mistake and causes many problems. For one thing, it will look to other WikiTreers like your ancestor is participating on WikiTree.
  2. Go to the Add a New Person form to start a profile for your ancestor as an unrelated person.
  3. Then click the links on your ancestor's profile page to add their parents and then continue up the tree as normal.
